West Brook Skating Rink

I haven't been ice skating in a really long time and my children have been wanting to learn how to skate. Yesterday we decided to take them for the very first time and we found this cute little rink run by the Knights of Columbus. I've heard from friends that they make the rink just for this time of the year and when winter is over they drain the pond until next year.

In my opinion they have done a nice job setting up the rink so that the back half is for those that wish to play hockey and the front half left for those that wish to just skate. For beginners they have these wooden supports that you can hang onto until you figure out what you are doing. They probably have a name for them but I don't know what they are called.

There is also a snack bar & rentals available. Children 5 and under are free. And for us that were skating over age 5 the cost was $3.50 per person. Skate rentals were $3.00 each for either figure or hockey skates and I had my skates sharpened for $5.00. I know that can rent other stuff there too like hockey pucks and sticks but I don't know the price.

Anyway I recommend this little place for some inexpensive outdoor fun to do with your kids.

Best Homemade Gravy for the Holidays

Prep: 5 min. Cook time: 5 min. Makes 2 cups

2 tablespoons Corn Starch
2 tablespoons of fat drippings
2 cups of broth or water
2 teaspoons "Better than Bouillon" chicken base
1/4 cup cold water

This is my own special recipe that has proven time after time to be loved by the family. First I take the pan drippings and pour them either into a 2 cup measuring cup or any container that makes pouring easy. I wait a few minutes for the fat or "grease" to separate and float to the top. I then pour this layer off my pan drippings leaving about 2 tablespoons behind. I then add enough water into my 2 cup measuring cup to make 2 cups of total liquid and pour this into a medium sauce pan or back into your roasting pan if it is stove top safe. Add 2 teaspoons of Better Than Bouillion Chicken Base. Cook over medium heat, stirring to loosen brown bits. Mix corn starch and 1/4 cup of cold water; stir into pan. Stirring constantly, simmer over medium heat for about 1 minute or until thicken. Season to taste.

Servings: 7 servings per mini loaf
Ingredients
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
3 cups granulated sugar
1 can (15 oz.) LIBBY'S® 100% Pure Pumpkin
4 large eggs
1 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup Apple NESTLÉ® JUICY JUICE® All Natural 100% Juice
1 cup sweetened dried, fresh or frozen cranberries
Directions
PREHEAT oven to 350° F. Grease and flour five or six 5 x 3-inch mini-disposable or metal loaf pans.

COMBINE flour, pumpkin pie spice, baking soda and salt in large bowl. Combine sugar, pumpkin, eggs, oil and Juicy Juice in large mixer bowl; beat until just blended. Add pumpkin mixture to flour mixture; stir just until moistened. Fold in cranberries. Spoon batter into prepared loaf pans.

BAKE for 50 to 55 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans on wire racks for 10 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely.

Recipe makes five or six mini loaves.

Double Layer Pumpkin Pie

This is an older recipe for a no-bake pie, so most of your readers probably have never seen it. It comes out of a small book I got in 1998 from Kraft.

Light and creamy, this no-bake pie will become a family favorite.

Prep time 20 min. plus refrigerating

Ingredients:

4 oz Philadelphia Brand Cream Cheese, softened

1 T milk or half-and-half

1 T sugar

1 graham cracker crumb crust (6 oz or 9 inches)

1 C cold milk or half-and-half

1 Can (16 oz) pumpkin

2 packages (4 serving size each) Jello Vanilla Flavor Instant Pudding & Pie Filling

1 t ground cinnamon

1/2 t ground ginger

1/4 t ground cloves

Instructions:

1. Mix cream cheese, 1 tablespoon milk and sugar in large bowl with wire whisk until smooth. Gently stire in whipped topping. Spread on bottom of crust.

2. Pour 1 cup milk into large bowl. Add pumpkin, pudding mixes and spices. Beat with wire whisk 2 minutes. (Mixture will be thick.) Spread over cream cheese layer.

3. Refrigerate 4 hours or until set. Garnish with additional whipped topping around the edge of pie and add chocolate-dipped pecan halves at intervals in the whipped topping. Stove leftover pie in refrigerator.

Also found this tidbit entitled SHARE THE HOLIDAYS. If you want to use it in something closer to Christmas it may be interesting. I think it would be great as a "block party" or for a really big family get-together.

After the holidays, have an "undecorating" party. "Plundering the tree," a Scandinavian tradition, turns an after-holiday chore into a celebration. Here's how it works. Each participating family removes the ornaments from its tree, placing a few of the ornaments on a table with some refreshments. The families then visit each others' homes and take one ornamet from each family to ue on their tree the following year. The result is an extra chance to enjoy holiday cheer with friends and share memories that will be represented by the ornaments in years to come.

After you take out the seeds clean off & rinse off all the "Pumpkin slime" dry on a paper towel
Spray oil on a cookie sheet and lay out seeds on the cookie sheet
Sprinkle with dry ranch seasoning powder
toss to coat seeds
bake at low oven... 275 to 300.... till golden & crunchy.
Put in a bowl & enjoy (especially warm) Sprinkle more ranch powder to taste if you want.

Don't toss those pumpkin seeds! Toast or roast pumpkin seeds in your oven in no time at all. They can can be salted or spiced to suit your palate. The shells are edible and are a good source of fiber. Use these methods with other seeds such as acorn squash and butternut squash. Pumpkin seeds are also known as pepitas.

Preparation:
Rinse pumpkin seeds. Use your fingers to remove all the pulp. Drain pumpkin seeds and discard pulp. Spread out on a cookie sheet to dry overnight. (Please note do not drain on a paper towel. The paper towel will stick to the seeds)

Preheat oven to 350 F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Toss pumpkin seeds in olive oil, butter, or spray with cooking spray. Sprinkle with salt, garlic powder, onion powder, seasoned salt, cayenne pepper, or your choice of seasonings. Toss to coat.

Bake about 1 hour, tossing every 15 to 20 minutes, until golden brown.

Cool pumpkin seeds before eating. Store in an airtight container at room temperature up to 3 months or refrigerate up to 1 year.

Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.
Name of Product: Magnetic maze boards
Units: About 18,500
Manufacturer: Lakeshore Learning Materials, of Carson, Calif.
Hazard: The magnetic maze board’s plastic wand can separate and expose a magnet that can be a choking hazard to children. Also, if a child has more than one of these toys and the magnets detach and are swallowed, the magnets can attract each other and cause intestinal perforations or blockages, which can be fatal.
Incidents/Injuries: Lakeshore has received ten reports of wands separating and magnets detaching. No injuries have been reported.
Description: This recall involves wooden magnetic maze boards. The wooden boards have a clear plastic sheet that covers small wooden or plastic pieces located inside a maze. What is Gymboree? Why is it so popular? Why is it so expensive? And I've filled my store with it. My children's closets are filled with it. This guide will help demystify this popular clothing line and how to help you choose pieces that will fit in with your childs wardrobe.

First lets talk about quality. Have you ever gone down to your local discount store and bought a package of infant or toddler socks just to be discourage when you washed and dried them because they shrunk small enough to fit a Barbie Doll? Or the hem line on the top shrinks up and there belly's popping out from underneath the top and you know you just bought that top last week. Did it shrink or did my child grow overnight? Maybe both. Or the brand new item you just bought and already has the stitching come out of it. If none of these things or something simular has happened to you, considered yourself very fortunate. All of these thing have happened to my children's clothing... plus so much more. When I first discovered Gymboree for my children, I started off with a couple of pieces for my daughter and socks for my son. I was amazed at how much these items held true to their stated size .... even after you washed and dried them. -- Particularly the socks. My 2 year old sons feet are on the wide side. So I usually try and cram my hand into the sock to stretch it out as much as possible so his toes didn't get too squished. I have never had to stretch out a Gymboree sock to fit in onto my son's foot. The quality is so FANTASTIC that Used Gymboree clothing sales for almost, if not the same, as the cost of new with tag items. This means that you can buy new, use, then turn around and resell them on eBay and practically cloth your kids for FREE.

Second lets talk about the Gymboree Lines. Every couple of weeks Gymboree comes out with a new line and each line has its own name such as Park City Luxe, Snow Blossom, Peruvian Doll, Wish You Were Here, Sunflower Fields, Strawberry Farm, Savanna Sunset, & Candy Apple just to name a few. Gymboree uses the same colors through out the line so that each piece can be matched with the other pieces in the same collection and sometimes they can be mixed and matched with other collections made in the same season. Lets say you were browsing through my store Top To Bottom Children's Store and you found a pair of yellow pants that you absolutely love but you are not sure how to find a matching top. You notice in the description that it says Strawberry Farm. You would find a matching item by typing in Strawberry Farm into the search box in my store. Now Strawberry Farm's yellow and Sunflower Fields yellow are not the same. The first one is a soft pale banana yellow while the other one is nice, bright and sunny. These two are from different lines and they do not match up very easily. This makes shopping for Grandma's, mom's, aunt's and friends much easier when they know what they are purchasing for your children and can help you add clothing pieces and accessories to your collection. Remember this brand holds a resale value very well and makes a wonderful gift to give and get.

Finally, Lets talk about what kind of items Gymboree you can find for sell besides the obvious like outfits. During the appropriate session, you may find items such as costumes, swim suits, wraps, and gorgeous holiday dresses and accessories to match. You can also find many of the basic that are great for mix and matching: gymmies (pajama's), solid tops, tights, leggings, socks, hair pretties, sometimes stuff animals that match the lines theme and collectable items such as blankets. Gymboree blankets are highly sought after as collectables. They are so warm and cozy for your little one. They also make great gift items.

I'm always being asked what is the difference between Capri's and Crops and I find it very important to buyers that the seller use the right word description in their auctions.

Capri's or is it Crops what are they? What season do you wear these short pants in but longer than shorts? I'm here to take some of the mystery out of these popular pant styles that will help give you some purchasing power! Meaning know what you are buying.

First of all, Capri pants is defined as ending mid-calf and are considered a casual, summer dress choice most often worn with a sandal between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Summer Capri fabric can be found made of linen. There are days during September that it may get unseasonably warm and during this month you might want to choose a pair made of denim or khaki and in September are most often worn with a mule or a sneaker.

On the other hand, Cropped pants is defined as ending just above the ankle. These are fine on most days through September when worn with mules or loafers and no socks. We've seen dressy styles pulled off well with sling-back pumps and hose but it does take a trained eye to carry this look off. In October, heavier-weight (i.e. leather, suede or corduroy) cropped pants can be worn with a mid-calf or a knee-high boot. These boot styles connect the pant bottom to your foot without creating a distracting break in the line.

It's never "in fashion" to wear capri pants with any type of hose. Nine out of ten times, socks look out of sync with any type of cropped pants as well.

Hi -- The original version that I wrote of this guide was on August 12, 2007. It's now October 29, 2007 and in the last two months of practicing the information outlined in this book so much has happened to us besides paying off large amounts of debt, cutting up credit cards, and really started to learn how to live within our means. The first step we did was to make a list of all of our debt with the smallest one on top of the list and ended with the largest amount on the bottom. Rather than debt consolidation, we started paying off the smallest one first while paying the minimum on the others. I must say that this list made me fill with dispare over the fact that it was smack in my face what huge amount of debt we accumulated and the fact that we really couldn't pay the minimum on each bill. I'm not totally sure how we managed to make this happen but we did. One month we had 5 pay checks instead of 4 weeks. We had tax rebates come back in. We made a grocery list and stuck to it. Actually I do think this was the biggest help and the hardest accomplishment. Because the only way we could make this happen was to make a menu for the week and then a list of what we needed. O.K. so I know that this is the obvious solution but lets face it, when you get to the grocery store there is always something that you forgot to put on the list or it looks good. Here is the hard part --- Only bring cash. No checkbook, No credit card, No ATM or Debt card. Just cold hard cash. Thats your budget and no going over or you have to put it back. It certainly makes you evaluate necessity of what in your cart. We never when hungry for one meal ever using this method but talk about trimming the fat out of a diet. It took me about 3 to 4 weeks to not squirm at going to the grocery store using this method. I truely believe that this was a major part in coming up with the cash we needed to pay our bills. We are now on the 4 year plan to pay off all debt, not including the mortgage. Dave recommends 2 years or less and to sell off things if you have too. Right now we are living in our means and snowballing the amount to pay off. 2 years here we come! FREEDOM! I hope this helpful.

Why are USA International Packages Taking Longer Than Usual To Get To The UK and Other Eurpean Countries?

Have you checked the weather lately? Northern Europe including the UK is getting hit hard with bad weather conditions that is effecting transportation.

The Royal Mail Web Site Report that "Mail services across the country have recovered well after recent disruption, however further fresh falls of snow recently in Wales and Gloucestershire, may have disrupted some delivery and collection services this week, especially in some of the more rural areas."

Deliveries and collections should be made today in all parts of the country. Royal Mail announced today that they plan and delivering mail as usual "...Following the recent bad weather, we reinstated the next day delivery guarantee for Special DeliveryTM items posted from Friday 15th January and due delivery from Monday 18th January; the next day guarantee remains in place across the country at this time."

First Class Mail International Packages from the USA to the UK that have normally taken 10 - 14 days to arrive are have been taking anywhere from 2 - 6 weeks. There are many reason for this including:

Disruptive weather in the UK and/or in the USA.
USA mail may be running slow.
UK mail may be running slow.
UK customs maybe holding the package for some unknown reason.

This has become very frusterating for customers expecting packages in a certain time frame.

What you can do? Most USA packages do not have tracking numbers unless they are shipped Priority or Express Mail and these will often be changed by the local post office to meet their barcoding system. Many times these packages are sitting at the local postal service waiting for the customer to pick them up and pay the custom fees and taxes associated with the importation laws and regulations of the destination country. If you haven't received your package from the USA in 2 weeks, we recommend that you check with your local postal company and open and inquiry. USA postal services will not allow you to open an inquiry on an international package that is not delivered in less than 6 weeks from its shipping date.

Recently I've been looking for a good sledding hill near our house to take the kids and to find one advertised has been a challenge. I thought I would create a list that you can post your favorite sledding hill so that others can enjoy it too. Feell free to comment and I'll add your information to the list.

TIP - Some sledding hills are much faster than they look. Tip of the day - Unless you really want sled tracks up your back, highly recommended to never turn your back to the sledders at the top of the hill. This could be a replay of "Grandma got run over by a reindeer" scene that could go haywire real quick.

This list is organized Alphabetically by State and then by town or city.

MAINE

Maine Trivia: Which Maine town is home to the famous American Flyer sleds? Answer ... South Paris

Rotary Park, Biddeford, Maine Once a home to skiers this hill doesn't look like much from the road. As you drive down its dirt road path heading towards the river reveals a nice surprise. But it's there and thriving with individuals of all ages. Free parking too!

What every driver should know?

I Wonder How Many People Know About This:

A 36 year old Female had an accident several weeks ago and totaled her car. A resident of Kilgore , Texas she was traveling between Gladewater & Kilgore. It was raining, though not excessively, when her car suddenly began to hydro-plane and literally flew through the air. She was not seriously injured but very stunned at the sudden occurrence!

When she explained to the highway patrolman what had happened he told her something that every driver should know:

NEVER DRIVE IN THE RAIN WITH YOUR CRUISE CONTROL ON!!!

She thought she was being cautious by setting the cruise control and maintaining a safe consistent speed in the rain.

But the highway patrolman told her that if the cruise control is on when your car begins to hydro-plane and your tires lose contact with the pavement, your car will accelerate to a higher rate of speed making you take off like an airplane.

She told the patrolman that was exactly what had occurred.

The patrolman said this warning should be listed on the driver's seat sun-visor:

NEVER USE THE CRUISE CONTROL

WHEN THE PAVEMENT IS WET OR ICY,

along with the airbag warning.

We tell our teenagers to set the cruise control and drive a safe speed, but we don't tell them to use the cruise control only when the pavement is dry.
The only person the accident victim found, who knew this (besides the patrolman), was a man who had had a similar accident, totaled his car and sustained severe injuries.

NOTE: Some vehicles (like the Toyota Sienna Limited XLE) will not allow you to set the cruise control when the windshield wipers are on.

If you send this to 15 people and only one of them doesn't know about this, then it was all worth it. You might have saved a life.

Make a messy volcano that explodes all over. Here's how.

An empty juice or water or soda bottle - this is going to be your volcano. (If you want to decorate it before you start the experiment, go right ahead! If you surround the bottle with playdough or clay, it will look very much like a volcano.)
Some baking soda
Some white vinegar

Move your volcano to a safe area. Preferably outside. First pour about half a cup of baking soda into the bottle. Then, keeping your head away from the top of the bottle, start pouring the vinegar into the bottle until your volcano explodes!

This is a great idea for your science project or just for fun. (Please do this with adult supervision. It sure does make a mess.)

Here is a great craft idea that we have done and then when it gets dark we put a white sheet up and a light and put on a shadow puppet show.

First, get some old socks -- make sure to ask permission before turning a sock into a puppet!

Next, get some markers. If you want to be fancy, you can get glue, buttons, extra fabric, and scissors too.

Put your hand in your sock so that four of your fingers are in the toe part of the sock and your thumb is in the heel part. When you move your hand, it will look like your sock puppet is opening his mouth.

Now you can decorate your puppet - give it eyes, a tongue, ears, a nose - anything you want!

Once you have a whole bunch of sock puppets, you can put on a puppet show for your friends and family.

Corny Corn Muffins

4 cups flour
2 cups cornmeal
4 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
3 eggs
3/4 cup vegetable oil
1 8.5-ounce can cream-style corn

Make sure rack is in center of oven. Generously spray or grease muffin cups and the top of a tin.
In a large bowl, with a whisk or fork, combine the flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, and salt. In a medium bowl, mix the eggs with a fork, then mixture into the dry mixture just until combined.
With wet (freshly washed) hands, roll batter into loosely formed balls about the size of each muffin cup, dropping each into a cup as you work.
Bake muffins for about 20-25 minutes or until a tooth-pick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few dry crumbs.

1/3 cup cocoa
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 1/4 teaspoons baking soda

1 1/2 cups buttermilk
1/4 cup vegetable oil
2 teaspoons vanilla

Chocolate treats:
Choose 1 or more of these to total one cup:
Chocolate chips
colored chocolate-covered peanuts
chocolate-covered peanut-butter pieces

Make sure rack is in center of oven. Generously spray or grease muffin cups and the top of a tin.
In a large bowl, with a fork or whisk, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. In a medium bowl, mix buttermilk, oil, and vanilla. Add wet mixture to the dry mixture, then stir just until combined. In 2 or 3 strokes, mix in chocolate treats. (Optional: hold back about 1/4 cup of treats to sprinkle on top.)
Divide the "mud" equally among muffin cups, then sprinkle the remaining treats on top, if you wish. (You can taste the batter - no eggs!) Bake about 25-30 minutes or until the tops are very well cooked.

Ice Cream Pancakes with Strawberry Sauce

4 large pancakes

1 pint vanilla ice cream Oil, as needed
1 cup water
1 egg
1 cup flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder sliced
pinch Salt

Strawberry Sauce
1 pint fresh or defrosted strawberries, sliced
1/4 cup sugar

1. Combine 1 cup ice cream with the water and egg in a bowl. Mix thoroughly. In a separate bowl, blend together flour, baking powder, and salt. Add the wet mixture to the dry mixture and stir until combined. Do not over mix.

2. Heat a lightly greased skillet over medium heat. Drop about 1/3 cup of batter onto the skillet for each pancake. After about 1 minute, when the pancake starts to bubble and are lightly browned on the bottom, flip them. Cook on the other side, just until lightly browned.

3. Toss strawberries and sugar together in a bowl. Let sit 15 minutes to 1 hour. Gently mash the berries with a potato masher.

4. Place 1 pancake in the center of each plate. Top with a small scoop of ice cream. Divide the fresh strawberry sauce among the pancakes. Serve immediately.

Here are pancake recipe tips that I have learned by trial & error.

MIXING:

Never overmix. Beat just until combined, ignoring a few lumps.
For thinner pancakes, add a little water.
After Mixing, batter can be refrigerated for up to six hours

PANS:

Cast-iron and nonstick skillets and griddles don't need oiling or greasing. Others do. If you need to add oil or butter, do it between batches. (I personally prefer my electric non-stick griddle.)
The pan is hot enough for the batter when a few drops of water bounce on the surface of the skillet.

POURING:

When pouring batter into the pan, leave a little room between pancakes.
For nice, round pancakes, pour the batter from close to pan.

FLIPPING:

Pancakes should be flipped when the top begins bubbling and the underside is lightly browned.
Flip only once, and remove when second side is cooked.

EATING:

Pancakes are best served immediately, but to serve together keep them warm by placing them on an oven-proof platter in a 180-200 degree F. oven after you cook them. (If not, your family will eat them faster than mom can make them.)

30 cookies ~ 350 degree F Oven

1 cup peanut butter (creamy or crunchy)

1 cup sugar

1 egg

Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Mix well.
Using your hands, roll the dough into one-inch balls and drop onto a lightly greased (or parchment lined) cookie sheet.
Bake for 10-12 minutes until golden brown. Press the tines of a fork into each cookie while still soft.

30 cookies ~ 375 degree oven

1 2/3 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 cup softened butter
3/4 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1/2 cup raisins
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1/4 cup sugar

Combine flour, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg. Set aside.
In a bowl, mash butter and sugar together until well blended. Add eggs and vanilla, and mix until light and fluffy. Add the flour mixture, and stir until well combined. Stir in walnuts and raisons.
Mix cinnamon and sugar on plate. Roll pieces of the dough into one inch balls. Roll each ball in the cinnamon-sugar mixture, and place on a greased cookie sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes.

Mom's Old-Fashioned Oatmeal Cookies

36 cookies * 375 degree Oven

1 cup flour
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1 cup rolled oats (not instant)
1 egg
1/2 cup raisins
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup heavy cream
1/4 Teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ginger

Combine flour, salt, baking powder, cinnamon, oats, ginger, brown sugar, and raisins together in a bowl. Mix with your fingers, breaking up any lumps of sugar.
Using a spoon, stir in egg, vegetable oil, and cream. The batter will be hard to stir. but keep going unil it is brown and gooey.
Drop batter by teaspoon onto a greased cookie sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes.

It's only October. This is the time of the year that we are suppose to be picking apples, racking leaves, going through corn mazes, and going to fairs and having a great time together as a family. You know making those memories that will last a life time. Here in Maine, a lovely New England State, the weather forecaster is predicting snow. I'm glad that I bought my children Gym b or ee 4 in 1 Coats this year. This way they can wear the fleece liner one day and dress it all to be cozy and warm the next day. I'm glad I got these early as they seem to be selling fast this year. Last year I think I waited until the first snow fell and everywhere was sold out of winter coats and boots. I've already started thinking about the holiday's coming up. Have you? It's my most favorite time of the year. I love to smell the cooking and enjoy the family getting together even though I feel like I never get enough rest or sleep. Cut old t-shirts into "wipe-size" and make a solution of 2 tablespoons baby shampoo with 2 cups water. Then soak the t-shirt scraps until they are really wet; ring out the excess and store them in a plastic bowl with a cover. Keep a plastic bag for the soiled ones. Keep a small diaper pail and fill with a solution of detergent (hand washable kind) to soak them in (this removes a lot). Then, just wash and reuse them.

Homemade Fabric Softener

1 You will need to mix your ingredients in a large container, that will hold at least one gallon of fluid. You can do this in a large bucket or pot, and once the fabric softener is mixed, you can transfer it to the container you want to store it.

2 Start by adding 1 cup of baking soda to your large bucket or container. Then add 1 cup of water to the baking soda. You do not have to stir to dissolve the baking soda, as the next step will do that for you.

3 Now, slowly pour in 6 cups of distilled white vinegar. This will cause a chemical reaction with the baking soda, and the mixture will start to fizz. (This is why you need to mix it in a large container.) Let the mixture fizz for a few minutes to help dissolve the baking soda.

4 Now add 6 more cups of water to the mixture. This will stop the fizzing process. Stir to properly mix all ingredients together.

5 If you want to add essential oil, you will now add your choice of oil. 10-15 drops of pure essential oil is generally sufficient enough to give the fabric softener a pleasant scent.

6 Pour your fabric softener into your choice of container. If you have left over fabric softener or laundry soap bottles, those will work excellent for storage of your new fabric softener. Just make sure they are properly cleansed before you add your new mix.

7 When you are ready to do laundry, add 1 cup of your fabric softener to the final rinse of your laundry, just as you would a store bought fabric softener.

Homemade Laundry Soap

I've been using this recipe for about 9 months now and LOVE it! Costs about $1.75 per 10 gallons. Save your old clean milk jugs to save you pennies even more and store your prepared laundry soap in them.

LAUNDRY SOAP

You can use Fels-Naptha bar soap in the homemade soap recipes, or you can use Ivory, Sunlight, or Zote bars. Don't use heavily perfumed soaps. Washing Soda and Borax can be found on the laundry or cleaning aisle. Recipe cost approx. $2 or less, depending on the cost of the Fels-Naptha.

Homemade Liquid Laundry Soap- Front or top load machine

4 Cups hot tap water
1 Fels-Naptha soap bar
1 Cup Washing Soda
½ Cup Borax

- Grate bar of soap and add to saucepan with water. Stir continually over medium-low heat until soap dissolves and is melted.

-Fill a 5 gallon bucket half full of hot tap water. Add melted soap, washing soda and Borax. Stir well until all powder is dissolved. Fill bucket to top with more hot water. Stir, cover and let sit overnight to thicken. Consistency will be mucous like.

-Stir and fill a used, clean, laundry soap dispenser half full with soap and then fill rest of way with water. Shake before each use as it will gel.

-Optional: You can add 10-15 drops of essential oil per 2 gallons. Add once soap has cooled. Ideas: lavender, rosemary, tea tree oil.

-Yield: Liquid soap recipe makes 10 gallons.

-Top Load Machine- 5/8 Cup per load (Approx. 180 loads)

-Front Load Machines- ¼ Cup per load (Approx. 640 loads)

New England Aquarium and Amtrak Discount Tickets

We went as a family to the New England Aquarium in Boston yesterday. I had the pleasure of taking my niece and my two children via Amtrak. This was the first time my son had been on the train and he absolutely loved it. It was worth the extra cost for us to take the train when you factor in the cost of parking and driving almost 3 hours one way to get there, gas, tolls, and the frustration coming from the children of having to sit still in the car that long. At least on the train, you can walk around, get a snack from the snack car and have room to play a game. I'm really big on finding discounts on-line to save money and this trip was no different. I was able to save some real money booking online with Amtrak and the kids between the ages 2 -15 years old were 1/2 price.

Our trip on the train was great and we met other families also heading to the New England Aquarium which lead to a discussion about buying tickets online. A lot of folks where going to buy tickets when they got to the Aquarium. If you never been, plan on waiting in line for a least 1 hour 'outside' to purchase your ticket and in February it's cold. Some families purchased their tickets in advance online directly from the Aquarium web-site and were quite surprised that they were charged a surcharge for the convenience of purchasing your tickets in advance. I personally was astounded to hear of such practice for the convenience of advance purchase tickets. I shared that I saved $8.00 on advance purchase online tickets for the attraction and here is how I did it.

Combo tickets for general admission and IMAX theater were also available through Orbitz for a discount and no surcharge. I had an instant savings of $8.00. Every little bit makes a difference. I'm sure that the specials vary from time to time but its certainly worth it to check it out.
